There are 50 suburbs around Australia this year expected to see stand-out results, according to a number of property experts.

Smart Property Investment took it to a panel of six leading property commentators and professionals and asked them for their top choices for investors over 2013.

Of all the states and territories, Queensland performed the most with 17 top picks. New South Wales and Western Australia both received 11 choices, and Victoria saw six picks. ACT failed to make the list, while South Australia and Northern Territory both had two suburbs tipped and Tasmania had one.

One area, tipped in Smart Property Investment’s Fast 50, has seen double digit growth, with new developments set to turn it from a “mining camp” into a “major regional centre,” according to the state government.

Regional development and lands minister, Brendon Grylls, said that transformation of WA’s Newman area was part of the Pilbara Cities initiative and the Shire of East Pilbara’s Newman Town Centre Revitalisation Plan.

“There is no point buying a four bedroom home with a garage, if tenants want two bedroom apartments.

“As a general rule, out of the population of people living in that area, 30 per cent of them should be renting. Some of the urban growth corridors, only 15 per cent of the population are renters.”

But if there is already existing infrastructure, Ms Collier-Kogtevs believes it is much more attractive to renters that planned expansion.
